Vericat’s general philosophy on the role of the Catechist is as follows:
Imagine the feeling you had during the most beautiful sunrise you’ve ever experienced…. Ineffable… Now imagine a three hour-long symphony with 20 different instruments laboring to remind you of that experience through the medium of music… Brilliant… Finally, imagine you had the task of translating that symphony into a 15 second kazoo solo that did the sunrise justice… what portions of the symphony are worth broadcasting? What hope is there of achieving this mission? The best a kazoo soloist can do is to realize they have an impossible task and try to use their 15 seconds to inspire their audience to go watch the sunrise or attend the symphony.
Analogously, a Catechist is in the position of the kazoo soloist. There is the ineffable Triune God and the experience of a relationship with Him. The documents that the Catholic Church has labored to pass down throughout the millennia remind one of that experience of God through the medium of text, and if one had the time to read them all in their entirety one would say the documents do a brilliant job. Much like the very long symphony, they pale in comparison to the essence of the experience they wish to represent, but they are a transcendent joyful experience worthy of pursuit. However, much like how no one thinks they have time for a three hour-long symphony, no one thinks they have time to read all those Church documents (but, much like a child not wanting to shower, once they get in they don’t want to get out). Enter the Catechist, whose job it is to reduce the majesty of the Church’s teachings into short presentations that are informative and entertaining enough to inspire souls to embrace their relationship with God and to jump into reading the church documents themselves. This is no easy task, but VeriCat.org is here to help you.
At VeriCat.org, we believe that some kazoo solos are better than others, therefore, we encourage you to leave reviews of the opensource content on this site to help the cream rise to the top. And if you feel like you could produce better catechetical content, we encourage you as a moral obligation to Contribute Content because the Church is in great need of good catechetical material and you mustn’t bury your talents.
Also, this has been a 15 second kazoo solo of Catechesi Tradendae “an apostolic exhortation on catechesis in our time” by Pope Saint John Paul II, which we recommend all catechists read.
